I would like to suggest to anyone who thinks there is little variation
in clarinet tone and players they listen to clarinet sections in any
new ensemble...or any repertory class at a college!
Here at Ithaca, there are several fine players. Put six together in a
section and work with the challenge of intonation and blending...
both issues helped considerably by a homogeneous sound from all six.
Same goes for blending in an orchestra with several instruments...or a
quintet...different players have different sounds.
How else can I tell who is in the practice room next to me? (I am usually
correct, and I'm too short to se inthe windows)
and I think it was David Shea who can identify what orchestra he's
listening to just by hearing the clarinetist...
