I make a suggestion and then urge my students with a set of instruments
to practice as much of their general material (etudes, scales, arps and
warm-up routine) on the A clarinet. Many times a set of clarinets several
years old will have an almost new looking A-but a clarinet really needs
to be played to keep it in shape (I feel). Also the student needs to
develop a feel for the A clarinet. I do not feel playing the Brahms sonatas
on the A clarinet for practice would be a good idea anymore than I feel one
should play the Mozart concerto on the Bb. However, Mozart for those who
don't have an A--but that is another question.
