If you read my comments again I gave no personal position. I indicated
what I thought were the extreme positions and said that most of us lie
in between these two. One might be closer to one or the other. As for
your references to Mozart and the fermatas. I agree that 18th century
players embellished/improvised on these cadences. To be consistant with
my scale, since there is no music written down for these fermatas, doesn't
the attention shift to what the player's personal expression or ability
is capable of providing at this point? As an audience we are made aware
of the players ability to play the instrument.

I must reiterate that I have not taken an extreme position one way or the
other. It was just a phenomena that I have noticed over the years. As for
the references to Larry Combs and John Yeh, that was just an example. They
were not intended to be the the top representatives of both of the clarinet
types I was discussing.
