We of course will never know how Muhlfeld sounded but we can get an idea
of his clarinets--I do not mention this to set up a discussion of the
player versus the instrument etc. But Keith Puddy has indeed restored
his original Bb and recorded both of the opera 120.

Diana--Brahms wrote some wonderful music utilizing the clarinet well
before he met Fraulein Klarinette in Meinigen. Do not forget that RM
began life in the orchestra as a member of the violin section at 17 years
of age. He was (I have read) pretty much a self taught clarinetist.
