Diana writes that "Mozart wrote for Stadler, Brahms wrote for
Muhlfield... surely the composers had a particular sound in mind!"

Diana, there are lots of comments from both composers about why
they wrote for those clarinet players but none of those comments
deal with their sound. They can be interpreted as dealing with
their musicianship and beauty of playing.

Mozart said of Stadler that "He played magnificently" but there is
no evidence that he was enamoured of his sound, nor is there
evidence that Brahms was eraptured by Muhlfeld's sound. I am sure
that they thought of it but I don't believe that it was high up
on their priority list.

Musicianship was. Taste was.
