Diana, there are many people who feel as you do with respect to
Mozart's clarinet music. Namely, that it is better of to play
what is on the page than to add spontaneous improvisations to
a performance of the work. So don't feel that you are, somehow,
weird for holding that view and expressing that opinion.

I hold a different opinion, however and I am not so sure that
we are as far apart as you might think.

I hold Mozart's music as sacred as you say you do, and I am
aggrieved by anyone who would not show his music the respect
and affection that it deserves. The only difference between
us is to what extent does my view that I may change it at will
when performing it really support my view that I respect it.

It is a long way from here to there and I don't want to give
you 10 pages of discussion on a subject on which you really
are not interested in. So tell me how deep you want to go, and
we shall have a journey together. Perhaps we shall even both
learn something from the voyage and others can look on as we
discuss the matter. And my nose will not be out of joint if
you prefer to drop it here.

It's up to you! There is going to be a cold winter in Ithaca
and you may not have much else to do besides discuss this.
