I am not going to even attempt to feign knowledge about this subject,
but I will share my opinion...
OK.
I strongly believe that music should be performed as it is on the page,
and interpreted appropriately according to period, etc.
However, I think there is plenty of new 20 th century music that clarinetists
can go wild with. Interpret THAT stuff however you want and set new
precedents, I think that's what it's all for...
(unless you're working directly with a composer, in which case you are
quite fortunate to have his/her ideas verbally conveyed to YOU so that
you know you are delivering the performance that was intended for the work.
I am a severe conservative, especially in musical areas. I once heard
a clarinetist "scoop" in Brahms's Sonata #2. I nearly cried. (He also
played his own arrangement of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" on the same recital.)
To each his own, but I can say I'll listen to a traditional performance
played well before I'll enjoy someone trying to be "Avant Garde" if that
is the appropriate term?) with something so sacred as Brahms or Mozart.
