Well, I'll reply to the question about what I look for in a technician.
I prefer one who is NOT affiliated with a store and does NOT buy and
sell instruments. The reason is that I look to a technician to maintain,
adjust instruments, and also to make recommendations on the worth
of instruments for possible purchase. If the person is associated with
a store, or buys or sells instruments, I do not feel I have an objective
opinion of what is being bought or sold...

In regard to what I look for in a store, I'd use as a model the Woodwind
& the Brasswind in Indiana. They have a large selection, an excellent and
informative catalog, an 800 number for orders, knowledgeable sales staff,
good prices, minimal handling and shipping cost, good trade in policy,
an excellent repair department, the opportunity to try out various mouthpieces
and send back the ones you don't want, etc., etc.
