This fine exercise is analogous to the exercises frequently practiced by string
players; without the instrument, string players practice taking "long bows"
(i.e., extended, fluid motions with the bow arm, as slowly and steadily as
possible). Then, the instrument is added to the equation--long bows are
performed on an open string. The result is the same as that described by DAvid
Shea above--an improved tone quality. Less phyical tension produces a more
liquid, freer sound. Bravo to David for relating this fine exercise!
