The air column does not terminate at the ends of the instrument. What are
called "end corrections" are a fundamental part of all scaling theory and
practice. The projection from the bell ends up in "thin air", but the
projection from the mouthpiece doesn't. Recent work has shown the mouth
cavity to have an important influence on the vibrational properties of
the air column.

From the point of view of the voicer, little can be adjusted other than
the bore, tone holes, key heights, and pads. That plus the
mouthpiece-reed-ligature combination is what can be tweaked. From
the point of view of the player, embouchure adjustments have always been
accepted as profound. I think we may have to add mouth and throat cavity
adjustments to the list. (Think -- not know!)
