Cary,

Your recent amplification (:)) of the mechanics of clarinet sound production
fit best with my understanding of the physics involved. I believe the key
point is that, what is vibrating is a column of air defined by
the instrument itself. There may be a secondary vibration from within a
players nasal/head cavities that can influence the sound, but it is certainly
a secondary, not primary component. The interaction of reed, lips, etc.,
act primarily to create a smooth, sustained, controlled EXCITER of the sound,
not RESONATOR. So, most of the work, training and skill of clarinet playing
is in technique and intonation, not sound quality. If I've misinterpreted
your comments, or extrapolated them beyond where you are comfortable, I'm
prepared for flames, or at the least, bad breath...
