Tom: Your experience with different mouthpieces-reeds and clarinets (bass)
intrigues. I have an A clarinet--usually it has been my experience that if a
reed feels a bit "soft" on the Bb it is usually right on the A. Now with this
particular A-reeds that feel a bit "heavy" (firm) on the Bb are right on for
the A in this particular set. I don't know what all of this entails-but some
of my instruments do play better with different mouthpieces. I realize that th
is will probably open up a discussion of something being wrong with me or with
the clarinet--I do not know. But certain fingerings in the altissimo do not
work on some of my clarinets but work just fine on others. I do no think that
this is at all unusual. I just happen to use the combination that is the best
and that will do the job at hand.

My Eb soprano is a 60000 series that came through the hands and studio of
Jerome Stowell (Eb in CSO for years). There are fingerings that work on this
clarinet but not on others that I have tried. I do not play much Eb soprano
but when I must I would be lost without this particular instrument.
