Ron is interested in basset horn/piano repertoire and asks what is
available for the combination besides the Danzi sonata (which,
personally, I have never found to be a satisfying musical experience).

There isn't much for the combination. In fact, there is so little,
that I play a lot of English horn/piano literature to get around
the problem. And that does not work too well, because it does not
exploit the lower range of the basset horn.

But if you can get a piano player, then get a clarinet player and do
the Mendelssohn concertpieces. I also had such a work (clarinet,
basset horn, and piano) written for me and I did the premiere of it
in Brooklyn around 1966 at the Brooklyn museum. It is by Richard
Lane and it is a nice piece. It is available for sale from the
composer whose address I could give you.

If you can get a harp and cello to do the Backhofen, you have good
resources. The problem with the basset horn is that there is not
a great deal of good repertoire available for it and very little with
piano. There are several quintets for basset horn and string
quartet, which is one of my favorite combinations.

Is this of any help to you?
