Dan,

I well understand your reluctance to spend time doing an experiment that
has such vague reasons for the undertaking. A bit of churlishness is
quite acceptable and adds a bit of spice to our discourse! I did not
indicate the nature of the sound differences I have experienced and expect
others would find because I did not want to contribute to the psychoacoustic
phenomena (emporor's clothes). But, since you want more of an idea of
why I propose the experiment, its because in my experience, a stiff reed
on a mouthpiece with a narrow aperture such as the Selmer HS* has what
I'd describe as a very tight, pure tone in comparison to a soft reed
on a mouthpiece with an extremely wide aperture such as the Vandoren 5RG
which produces a much looser, richer, less focused, tone. I suspect, but
don't have the equipment to try, that if you put both tones through a
wave form analyser you'd find much more complex bundle of wave forms from
the soft reed, wide aperture combination than from the stiff reed, narrow
aperture.
