I know I should let the issue of reeds, mouthpieces and clarinet sound
die a natural death, but my contrary nature can't resist one (yet another)
suggestion:

Go to your local woodwind shop, (assuming that you don't already have a
dozen or so mouthpieces lying around) and try the following:

A Vandoren 5JB mouthpiece (with a 1.47 mm gap) and a 1-1/2 hardness reed,
(note that the recommended range for this jazz mouthpiece is from 1 to 2).

Follow that with a Selmer HS* (or equivalent) mouthpiece with a 1.0 mm gap
and a 3 or 4 (or whatever is the stiffest reed you are comfortable with) reed.

I have tried this...would be curious to know of how those who are much more ski
lled and experienced than I would describe the experience...
