David,

Congratulations on the best piece of reed advice I've read on this network
so far. I share your opinion and believe that no matter how much you sand,
scrape, cut, maul, soak or beat up reeds, you'll never find the "perfect" reed
and they'll never sound the same. Instead of getting so bogged down in the
technical aspects of playing, focus more on how you can compensate for the
reed du jour's particular inadequacies. The reed and the mouthpiece are but
two components in a list of many concerning tone production. If one puts
David Schiffrin (sp?) on a Bundy clarinet with a stock mouthpiece and a Rico
reed, he's still going to have an amazing sound. Think about why. I don't
have the answer but I do know that changing your sound (if you're dissatisfied
with it) is not as easy as switching horns, mouthpieces or reeds.
The voice of reason speaks. Thanks David!
