Anne,

Thanks much for your reply about my questions re reed strength. Right now
there seems to be a world of difference between a 2-1/2 and 3! But, I've
only been playing for about 6 months, so I have faith that the embouchure
will develop. Also, even though I've only been playing a short time, I'm
already playing the kinds of music that I enjoy. I became very much
interested in opera a few years ago and find myself especially enjoying
the various soprano arias. Not being a soprano (closer to a bass-baritone)
I find it difficult to hum, sing, or whistle the soprano arias. But, realized
that the clarinet is an ideal instrument to use, as all soprano (from mezzo
to coloratura) arias are well within the range. So, have begun playing the
various arias, starting with things like Mozart's Porgi, Amor; Gluck's
Che faro senza Euridice, etc., which are quite easy, but very satisfying.
I've also been using a computer program, Copyist, to copy areas in original
keys, than transpose for B-flat or A clarinet so that I can play the music
along with CD's of performances. Great way to learn the clarinet and also
gain a better understanding of the operas as well!

Anyhow, delighted to discover the klarinet news group, thanks to Dan
Leeson.
