Tom Ascher-
About reed strength: I presonally play on Vandoren V-12,
with the hardness at 4. I really like the V-12 reeds because they
are made from thicker blanks (alto sax I think). I feel that they
hold up much better than the regular Vandoren reeds. But, keep in
mind I am also playing on them for at least three hours a day.

As for your playing, you may want to eventually move up to
3 and even 3 1/2 reeds. I have found thatthe harder reeds play
consistently for longer periods of time and the high register speaks
_MUCH_ easier. If the reeds are too soft, your upper range will be
usually really flat. It may take a while before the upper range
starts to sound good again. You said that you are just getting
back into playing again, so with time your embouchure should get
back to where it was before. Time, it always takes time...

Hope this helps...
