About "authentic" instruments: I would agree with you completely that
using mechanically obsolete instruments is not desirable, but I think
about a few recordings done with emphasis on authenticity that I
find stunningly worthwhile. The most striking that I can think of is Roger
Norrington's relatively recent recording of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony
performed on "authentic" instruments. Can anyone else think of recordings
meant to capture authenticity, either through instruments or performance
practice that would be of interest? ---Anthony Taylor at FSU
