Shari-
Well as for the third octave...
It does take time and practice to get that octave in tune and to have a
decent tone. Here are a few tips...
1. MAke sure that you have a reed that is hard enough. Soft reeds just
make intonation almost impossible. (I don't know your set up so I can't be
to specific...)

2. You must keep your oral cavity open as you go higher. If you close
it off then your pitch will be off.

3. There are numerous exercises that you can work on.. I'll get some
and pass them on to you. I don't have them with me at the moment. Look for
them in future mailings....

4. As for your embouchure... You must keep your corners in and you may
have to take in more mouthpiece in to your mouth. You will also need a ton
of support up in that octave as you are overblowing lower partials.

Well there are a few tips.. I'll send you the exercises soon.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I'll do my best to
answer them. A few questions that will also help my response..
1. What kind of clarinet do you play on, also mouthpiece type and
brand and strength of reeds do you use?

Feel free to ask any questions or write to me directly...
