Greetings to all...
Dan Leeson has offered the following for discussion...
>>My interest is in repertoire and performance issues. How does one
>>play Mozart's clarinet music in a way that is compatible with
>>the way it was performed during his lifetime, for example?
I have always been puzzled by the high amount of interest in "authentic"
performances on "authentic" instruments. My perspective differs; I see creative
geniuses of the caliber of Mozart as people who likely were fascinated by
beauty, imagination--as people who admired the new, different, and exciting in
art. I believe Mozart would be captivated by ** ANY ** performance of his music
on ** ANY ** instruments that captures beauty and imagination--even if it
was cast in a twentieth century sonority with twentieth century instruments by
players who employ current trends in musical expression. The richness of
Mozart's music surely is greater than any one mode of expression; it is music
for all time, and for all sensibilities, then and now.
