I think woodwind quintet playing can be lots of fun, but perhaps this is
because i LOVE the flute and the oboe, and I really enjoy beong able to
blend and make music with so many interesting colors...
My quintet recently performed the Elliot Carter woodwind quintet, and we
are performing the Sechs Bagatellen by Gyorgy Ligeti on Thursday...we are
only doing the first four, actually. We are working up Le Tombeau de Couperin
for our oboe player's recital, and we are also doing some readings and
performances of composer's pieces and arrangements here at Ithaca College.
For me, this quintet experience has been especially enlightening, I get to
play with some of the top players in the school (which just pushes me that
much harder) and I am being exposed to contemporary literature that I would
otherwise run from like the plague!
We are all entitled to our own opinions regarding ensemble playing, but
I jsut thought I'd put my two cents in, in favor of the quintet experience
for students in my position.
