I understand that a Johnston mouthpiece has its best sound only if you
have a well-balanced reed, so you may need to work with your reeds a bit.
I also tend to remove some wood on the thicker half of the vamp (often
called the lower vamp) to make the throat tones clearer.

Of course, the comments about air are the most important. Messing with
your reeds does little if the air isn't focused, but maybe my comments
about reeds will still be of help.
