Subj: reed case problems

Some time ago, someone mentioned on this list that he or
she was having trouble with mold appearing on reeds stored
in a Vandoren reed case. I too had a bout of that difficulty
and think I know why and what to do about it. The humidistat
element in these cases can eventually saturate and wear out,
with the result that the humidity in the case can reach a
sustained level sufficient for mold growth. You can buy
replacement elements for these cases. In my case, replacing the
element seems to have solved the problem. The instructions
also suggest periodically warming the element under a desk
lamp to dry it out and extend its useful life.
