Position Announcement

CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC

MEMPHIS STATE UNIVERSITY is seeking a Chairperson for the Depart-
ment of Music. This position is a tenure-track appointment and
will begin in the Fall of 1994. Salary is negotiable and
competitive.

Responsibilities will include providing artistic and administra-
tive leadership; teaching; leading the Department in recruitment,
funding raising, grant writing, and community outreach; man
aging
Departmental budgets; supervising and evaluating faculty and
staff; and providing academic leadership.

Qualifications: (1) Five years minimum teaching experience in
higher education; (2) earned doctorate or a master's degree in
music plus equivalent distinguished national accomplishments; (3)
substantial record of scholarly research and/or artistic
achievement commensurate with an appointment at the level
of full professor; (4) demonstrated administrative and leadership
skills, with man
agement training desired; (5) demonstrated
commitment to excellence in teaching; (6 ) demonstrated ability in
development; and (7) commitment to a broad musical/academic
program. Curricular balance within the Department may be taken
into consideration in the selection process.

Memphis State University is located in Memphis, Tennessee, one of
the most musically active communities in the Mid-South. It is a
fully comprehensive university with a current enrollment of
more than 20,000 students.

The Department of Music is fully accredit by the National Associa-
tion of Schools of Music and is composed of more than 40 full-time
faculty and approximately 225 music majors. Degree programs
include: Bachelor of Music in performance, sacred music, music
history, composition, school music, music business, recording
technology, jazz and studio performance and jazz and studio
composition arranging; Master of Music in performance (including
composition), sacred music, music history, Orff Schulwerk
,
pedagogy, and music education; Doctor of Musical Arts in
composition, performance, sacred music, and music education;
Doctor of Philosophy in Musicology. It is the only university in
Tennessee to offer the Doctorate in Music.
