I am sure you will get many responses to your plea. Some long years ago I
was instructed in the art of the handmade reed. It was expected that our
lessons would be played on our reeds. I still use commercial reeds a
re-work them. However, I do make reeds. The university where I teach has
two different reed machines. I use them and have students use them as
well. They usually begin by "adjusting" commercial reeds and then go onto
blanks. What usually happens is that they wind up doing the entire job by
hand from blanks. Some of my colleagues consider me less than a real reed
maker because I don't make my own blanks from tubes. So I am taking the
plunge and buying tube can from Ets Donati in Carqueiranne. This name was
given to me by Dr. Robert Spring. I might suggest a good book on the subject
by my teacher Glenn H. Bowen. You can get a copy--check inter-library loan,
