I've been making my own reeds from tube cane for about seven years. I
believe that it is the answer to very many reed problems. I begin with
tube cane and can reject bad pieces of cane in the beginning. I do all of
the work by hand with the exception of shaping the reed with a great shaper
that I bought several years ago from Bill Brannen in Evanston. Because of
the curing process that I use before making the reed, I have few problems
with reeds warping. I tried playing on some commercial reeds last year and
was amazed again at the lack of consistancy in the reeds and cane. Making
the reed after the curing process etc, takes me about 20 minutes. I think
it is well worth the investment as I used to take at least that long either
cursing at commercial reeds or smashing them!
