In response to Andrea's query about graduate work. I am a graduate of the
University of Arkansas and feel that I can recommend Robert Uniker for your
advanced study. He is a strong clarinet coach. We have one Bass clarinet
undergrad and I can not see the school not allowing you to major on that
instrument. In my personal, humble, and honestly a double reed players
opinion, I can not see making a person change their primary instrument. A
bassoon player is not capable of suddenly majoring on Oboe. They are similar
instruments, but only in small ways. Given the Bass Clarinet is a full member
of the Clarinet family, and that it is largely similar to the soprano, etc.,
but all players would agree that switching is not as simple as picking one up
and putting the other down...Now off my soapbox....
To get into grad school at the U of A, you should take either the MAT
or the GRE exams and the minimum GPA is 2.7. I believe that I didn't have to
take the test because I had better than a 2.7, but I started my masters 5 years
ago. I don't know if that is still available. To get information from the
Music department, just write to Chal Ragsdale, Chairman of the Department of
Music, 201 Music Annex, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Ar 72701.
The phone number is (501) 575-4701 and his Bitnet address is RAGSDALE@-----.
UARK.EDU Let me know if you need anything. Good luck with graduation and all.
There are assistantships available, but I would get to him about it soon. They
tend to be offered in February.
