Hi. I wonder whether the position of the thumb rest is causing some of the
people to have difficulty in covering the tone holes properly. I myself (on
the advice of my former clarinet teacher - who plays in the N.A.C.
Orchestra) had my thumb rest raised by about one inch. His explanation was
that raising the thumb rest would help the hand position - mainly a
straighter wrist- and the dexterity of the fingers. I have found that this
is very much the case. I know that there are now adjustable thumbe rests
available but as far as I know they cost about $90.00. However I believe
that with the adjustable device one can adjust the thumb rest to the exact
desired position. I don't think that hand size has anything to do with it -
my hands are just about as big as my teacher's hands/
