Fred,

My professor had a solid piece of gold across the lower front 4 teeth.

He showed it to me back in the '60's, and I don't remember if it was removable or not. He played fine clarinet with it. He had told the dentist that the easiest thing would be to do it that way so he could play clarinet well.
