Dear Saturday List
One subject I couldn't stand back in my conservatory-univ days was musical analysis.As I grow older though and have more experience as a performer,it becomes more and more important.
In my time there was the(dreaded?) Schenker method,which reduced everything to a few notes,whether it was a phrase or a symphony.
As I am preparing to perform a lovely and difficult sonatina by Alec Wilder,would appreciate any new books,thoughts,methods,etc on analysis.The more I study this work I perceive the 12-tone jazz of the composer...yet for example he uses 11 tones to open the movement and finally the 12th tone sneaks in.In his fourth movement ,he imitates Bach to my eyes and ears and even has a kind of jazz stretto.
My  personal project this year has been studying the late composer's works and I find a treasure chest buried within.He also has quintets,octets,etc

Awaiting any replies on analysis of music and Wilder.
