Dear List members and especially inventor David Crispin:
As orchestral instruments continue--to my aging ears--play louder and louder
,would like to suggest to inventor Crispin and others with technical
ingenuity, to invent a dvice/shield which projects the sound of such
instruments as the English horn,contra-bassoon,etc.
Many moons ago I played in an orchestra where the bass clarinettist used
such a device ,which was a metal shield projecting his sound. Will never
forget the Mahler 1st with the sound of a projected bass clarinet!
These days find myself trying to cut through an over-orchestrated (but well
written) string and wind section with a solo in the Bachianas Brasileiras
no. 7 of Villa Lobos.(These lovely works which Stravinsky detested are
Brazilianized versions of Bach )
Within this work, is an EHorn solo which hits up the upper reaches of the
EH's range and is an innovative orchestral effect even today but I find
myself having to play far louder than I would ever wish to play.
Awaiting the next Crispin creation: a projecting shield !
Rgds,
Harold Emert
