As a 'hack' violist, I sometimes find it more convenient to refer to the
viola as a violin. A good example is when going through airport security. The
tsa guards usually know what a violin is and that violinjs are allowed on
planes. Most have no idea what a viola is and once you try to explain to them
what it is, they say "oh, it's like a violin". (just like it's probably
easier to an oboist to refer to their instrument as a clarinet to negate the need
for an explanation to those who couldn't care less)
