I spent a bunch of years in one of the big DC area military bands - one of
the first things you learn is to NOT watch the conductors - most of them
couldn't conduct their way out a paper bag. If you watched the conductor you just
got confused. I'm sure these players (in addition to having the dry heaves
and heebie jeebies just having to be that close to him) were purposely
letting their gaze go out of focus so they wouldn't have to watch. Besides, I
think that all military musicians can play Stars & Stripes in their sleep. (So
don't ask what happens when I have to play it now in an orchestra 1/2 step
lower.......)
