Subj: [DR-L] Can octave vent holes be enlarged? (oboe)
Date: Tue, 08 Apr 2008 13:22:23 -0400

I've been practising to be able to play harder reeds, and have a rather
"open, not pinched embouchure" I have noticed that with the Loree (older
GG series) on a hard reed the lower vent notes like G and A flat will
drop to the lower octave unless I pinch. Very annoying. This does not
happen on the old backup Kohlert oboe- I checked, and the diameter of
the vent on the Kohlert is visibly wider- is this a factor? I can't
blame it on a dirty vent, because when I had them cleaned, it was the
same on some reeds.
Any knowledge about what happens to upper notes if the vent size is
enlarged?
