Subj: [DR-L] Leak Geek Wow!
Date: Mon, 07 Apr 2008 21:30:52 -0400

Dear Lists
Hats off to a genius--I am speaking of David Crispin of Jackson,Ms. and his
Leak Geek.
A shame it wasn~t invented centuries ago when I first began tootliung the
oboe and always was abusing fishskin(or goldbeater skin for our English
friends).
Just arrived from NYC with some more fishskin purchased at the Oboe Works
there and on arrival Leak Geek was also waiting for me in the post-mail.
.So I decided to try the latter and really it seals up the reed from top to
bottom--something fishskin does not do.The idea is to apply the seal
wherever is needed and tonight three reeds I was ready to re-tie are playing
sealed up.
Reminds me of my first--expensive--lessons on the oboe ages ago when Charles
Kuskin--where is he now--spent two sessions on tying reeds ,insisting that
they should be so air-tight that no fishskin would be needed. For years I
thought his was the ideal solution rather than a realistic approach to
reed-maing until the geek arrived.
Prediction--the leak geek could eventually substitute fishskin.
My fishskin and nailpolish to seal it are still waiting on the reed
work-table to be used.
Again hats off to David Crispin--who is in the great tradition of American
inventors.

Rgds,

Harold Emert
Rio de Janeiro-Brazil.
