Doublereed Archive - Posting 000012.txt from 2008/04

Um - historical note: Luther was a Catholic and Augustinian Monk. He did not
intend to start a new sect; things kinda took off on their own and escalated
into "Hey, let's start our own thing." No offense to any Lutherans out
there. I know I'm being quite short and not concise. So, I guess one could
possibly say he became a Lutheran, but originally, he was a Catholic.

bach is serious. and it reminds me of an ongoing discussion that involves
bach and his lutheranism.
a prima facia argument must be made that luther is the most famous lutheran,
but bach has to be the second most famous lutheran.
so who's the third most famous lutheran?

I agree with the call to lighten up. The tongue in cheek attitude is the
message, not the performance of Bach. And I've heard a lot of 'in
tune' performances of Bach that are simply clueless...about intonation,
about style and/or about historical context.
I like the way it made me laugh. When Leo Fuks explains his point of
view, regardless of how serious he speaks (and he always wears a helmet)
there is a smile in his voice.
Creative he is.
