17 years before Edison "invented" it, the 15 year old daughter of
Edouard-Leon Scott was recorded singing, done via a phonautograph,
basically an arm needle vibrating via a sound pickup membrane onto a
paper cylinder coated with lamp black carbon. In 2007 it was reproduced
into sound via computers. Scott first applied for French patents in 1857.
