From: "HAROLD" <harold@-----.br> Subj: [DR-L] new(or old?)approach to reedmaking Date: Mon, 03 Mar 2008 13:14:49 -0500
Dear List(s):
Reedmaking always has its experts :like one oboe reed scientist who gave a
lecture at the IDRS conference in Indiana complete with slides, measurements
and scientific theories.
Under the inspiration of oboist/inventor Crispin--a frequent contributor to
these lists--I am developing my old unothordox ways of making reeds. And like
Crispin, my "way"" of doing things is completely different that what I
traditionally have learned in school or by reading.
But wasn't Edison,Ford and company another bunch of oddballs?
My approach:(1)Waxed dental floss instead the traditional twine/thread
(2)Dismounted old reeds (without their tubes),in two parts ,saved in a cigar
box or a similar box.
(3)Mini-dental rubber bands--using three-four at a time to remount old reeds
(4)Mark Chudnow(optional) gold and silver tubes of tradition and
"candlestick"(European style) molds.
(5) small red cross penknife with a scissor--for cutting(no wood blocks) and
taking bits off (instead of sandpaper)
Procedure:(1)Put together two blades of the old reed--which fit
together--using the mini-dental rubberbands.
(2)Tie and re-tie up until the reed really, really vibrates. Don't be afraid
to spend even 30 minutes on this part of the reedmaking and if the first
example doesn't work, try another pair of reed blades.
(3) Try with your knife and eye --or machine -- to evaluate whether the two
blades resemble each other in appearance.
(4) Blow them in and keep on trying!
All I am missing is Crispin's substitute for fishskin/goldbeater skin.
Justification:new reeds are exactly that new.... but an old reed is broken
in and ready for another step towards perfection.
Any comments always appreciated.
Best,
Harold Emert
Rio-Brazil
PS--At a rehearsal today with bassoonist Noel Devos, I heard one of the
loveliest reeds ever: a bassoon reed from 1948 which Devos had saved as a
memoir from his teacherin France.Old reeds are like aging wine?
