Agreed, there are those of us who understand micrometer to mean the little
gadget with a C-shaped work area and a twist of the handle to measure
things. But then, a micrometric caliper (or micrometer-caliper) could be
what you refer to as a Vernier caliper. My dial guage caliper does not have
a Vernier scale, while my metric Boley caliper does have a Vernier scale.
Neither is what I used to call a micrometer, but each is indeed different
and by definition is micrometric in function. Ach, they are just words - we
must have consensus as to what the words mean, if anything. Measuring cane
to 0.0001" is an exercise in frustration anyway. Too much compression for
that level of accuracy.
Enjoy!
