Have you considered simply asking the school to include a quintet as an
undergraduate class for credit? This way, the coach can be paid for
teaching/coaching you and you would get grades for such.
In the situations I have been either involved in myself or seen as a faculty
member, most colleges are reluctant to have an undergrad scholarship
quintet. Many have this for a graduate quintet (i.e. grad assistants and such). At
one school where I teach there are chamber groups students sign up for, in
order to receive credit, for such ensembles including woodwind quintets, double
reed trios and such, flute choirs, etc.
Just some thoughts: propose that the group be a 'for credit class" that is
by audition only. Many times, when applying to grad schools they would rather
see that on your transcripts as opposed to no record of such.
Just a few thoughts.
