Get To Know Our Soloists:
Name: Julia DeRosa
Where are you from? New Canaan, Connecticut
How old are you? (As of 4/1/08) 17
How long have you been playing your instrument? 6 years
Why did you choose your instrument? I chose the oboe because I had
the opportunity to try it at a Young People’s Concert as a young child,
and immediately loved playing it. Also, I have always found the sound of
the oboe to be unique and very exotic.
Favorite thing about playing in an orchestra or playing music in
general: I find playing in an orchestra to be miraculous- there is nothing
that comes close to the feeling of playing music with other people. Playing
the oboe has allowed me to get much more intimately related to the music
than just listening would have done.
What other types of music do you like? I like almost all kinds of music,
except kinds like hip
hop and rap.
How much do you practice? About 3 to 4 hours a day
How do you motivate yourself to practice when you’re not in the mood? I
have a quote
that reminds me of my goals: “If you miss practicing one day, you
notice. If you miss it for two
days, your colleagues notice. If you miss it three days, everyone notices.”
Do you have any pre-concert rituals you follow? I usually spend the
preceding day
perfecting my reeds to find the most comfortable and expressive one. I
also often listen to my
favorite recordings of the music I am about to play multiple times,
especially if I am playing
something from memory.
Do you ever get nervous before a performance? I don’t get particularly
nervous, because I
always do my best in terms of preparation; this way I can tell myself
that my best is all I can give
and being nervous will only harm that goal.
What is your ultimate “dream” performance situation? My ultimate dream
is to perform in
one of the top five professional orchestras.
Do you intend to pursue a career as a professional musician? Yes
What is your favorite food? Spaghetti and meatballs
Do you have any hobbies? Making oboe reeds!
What is your favorite movie? Any of the Harry Potter movies
Tell us about your pets, or the kind of pet you wish you had. I have
three cats named
Miezi, Crookshanks and Amber.
