so if the oboe playing is a fiction, it's an interesting plot addition. being discovered bagging groceries then transitioning to professional footballer wasn't somehow impressive enough. he also had to play the oboe. now that's a impressive! but it's only impressive to the extent that you know what an oboe is so the player has to have a reason to tell the coach (and the audience) it's a member of the woodwind family. i wonder if the same people who didn't know what an oboe is know what the woodwind family is.

in a joke, you add a name of a character or place that has a funny sound to it. oboe, not funny. contrabassoon, funny. ok, not that funny. sackbutt. funny, but maybe too implausible.

my theory for something of absolutely no consequence: he played it in junior high school and the producers were humored and added it to the plot.

fun that the oboe was used but i'm pretty sure it will not stimulate a single conversion among young players. to those teachers on the list, i'd be interested in any young person reaction to the commercial.

If you go to this site:

http://www.houstontexans.com/tv/index.asp?mm_file_id=2117&play_clip=Y

You'll see the making of the ad. At the very end
(it's a long clip- you may want to fast forward), he
actually tries to play the oboe and claims it's really
out of tune "how can I play with this equipment?" The
funny part is the director says just pretend to play
the oboe and the football players says that's what
he's doing.
