Then something's screwy somewhere and if it is true that Pitts never
played the oboe at all then he (or someone) needs to address it
officially. There is simply too much verbiage on the Web proclaiming
his musical abilities. In fact, just saw a story on the IDRS website
about this commercial and nowhere does it say that the Pitts story is
untrue.
On the other hand, there is an extended film of the commercial's
creation on the Texans' website. At the end, Pitts "plays" the oboe. He
sounds terrible, just like someone who's never played the thing. In
this "behind the scenes" film they never address Pitts's actual oboe
playing nor do they include any footage of anyone--Mr. Crosby?--showing
him "how to play it." So either your friend is correct or Pitts has
been away from the instrument for so long he cannot muster a single
tone anymore.

Hi Norm,
I must respectfully disagree. I got called to help on this
commercial,
but was busy. My good friend Bob Crosby did the job instead. It
involved
playing the soundtrack and showing Chester how to look like he's
playing the
oboe.
Bob said Chester was a very nice, smart guy. He was a quick study and
worked
very hard, but he had no previous experience with the oboe.
