Bees wax provides an outstanding grip to the tube and really grabs the
bocal. Also important, is that bees wax eliminates seam leaks. I also
believe that sealing the butt end of the reed reduces or discourages
nature's phenomenon of capillary action.

I might agree abut the capillary action since I don't want to waterlog
reeds. However a properly shaped & crafted bassoon reed only needs wires to
hold it together. I also have a very nice #3 tapered pin reamer that is a
good match to a Heckel bocal. The only reason I put on cyanoacrylate is to
keep the reed together when it drys out, to make it a little stronger & to
help it resist shredding & deforming.. If it wasn't for the drying out
problem I wouldn't have to use anything to keep the reed together. Lawrence
