The name of E. Rothwell/Barbirolli evokes a memory of a time in Houston
Symphony, when another fine lady was our guest.
We were rehearsing Mozart concerto for two pianos with Vronsky and Babin,
under the baton of Sir Malcolm Sargent. At one point Sir M (rather full of
himself) stopped and said (not very quietly) to Madam V "Oh no, my god that
sounds like Puccini". Being the gentle lady that she was, M. Vronsky replie=
d
quietly but audibly, "Well I rather like Puccini". He was rude - she was
not, and we all had a good chuckle.
There was a time when unenforceable rules were observed by the gentle
people.
