Dear List,
A sad day, indeed. My old friend from Salzburg, Joan Burrows Trawford,
had played in the Halle Orchestra with Sir John B and so, knew Lady B.
One time, when I was visiting Joan in Spaulding (near Petersborough) in
East Anglia, Lady B called. Joannie insisted that I talk to her so I
had the extreme pleasure of experiencing that most charming lady's
manner which could not have been more cordial! She acted as if we had
been friends and associates forever!
My favorite Lady B story came from the late Cathy Dufford Paulu who with
her husband, Norman, were principals in the Oklahoma City Symphony when
Sir John cane to guest conduct. The Paulus invited them to dinner and
Cathy and Lady B spent the evening comparing reeds, instruments etc.
Norman recorded this session. The two fine lady oboe players SWITCHED
reeds and began to play. In spite of the very different reed styles,
within minutes each sounded just like her normal self! One can HEAR
this on the tape!
Teachers of beginners, take note! Get a concept of the oboe tone into
the ears of the students and they can make that sound regardless of the
equipment!!
2 cents,
B
