Hi -
I vote to make the cuts needed so that the performance works for you
and your audience. You are in the best position to judge how to bring
the music "to life" and how to present it.
I say this despite being a composer.
Richard Taruskin has written some very interesting and controversial
essays on "authenticity," arguing that even the most vocal proponents
are still picking and choosing what to preserve and what to change,
that these "authentic" performances reflect just as much, if not more,
about current tastes and practices than they do about the tastes and
presentations of the time of composition. (And he adds, this is a GOOD
thing.)
Richard Dawkins writes about the changing moral zeitgeist (in "The God
Delusion"). The changes over the ages have been quite dramatic,
especially in regards to issues like slavery, race, and the vote for
women. Surely there has been a changing "aesthetic zeitgeist" as well.
Very likely if the composers were alive today and understood modern
audiences and performing situations, they would consider making changes
to the work as well, perhaps more than we would want.

Dear List(s):
Would appreciate any advice from experienced hands on these Lists about
cutting--and pasting --music.
Am organizing presently a program of works by a composer who studied
with
Haydn and who departed Vienna to live and work in Rio de Janeiro in
the
early 1800s,or when the Portuguese Royal family fled Napoleon and
established their court in the tropics.(1808---we are celebrating the
200th
anniversary of their arrival this year)
I find the music written by this fine craftsman,S. Neukomm to be well
written but often too repetitive. But that's my opinion.
Have participated in operas where there are cuts but rarely in
instrumental
works.
Help!
Rgds,
Harold Emert
