UNDERGRADUATE ORCHESTRAL SCHOLARSHIPS

in the area of

OBOE AND BASSOON

available for the 2008 - 2009 academic year

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: MARCH 20, 2008

QUALIFICATIONS: completed high school diploma

DESCRIPTION: Scholarship recipients are required to be a member of the
University Symphony Orchestra and selected chamber ensembles for each
semester
that they are in school. THESE SCHOLARSHIPS DO NOT REQUIRE MEMBERSHIP
IN THE
UA BAND PROGRAM.

UNDERGRADUATE QUINTET: Scholarship recipients would be required to
perform in
the one of the UA undergraduate quintets and be mentored by The
Lyrique Quintette, the quintet-in-residence at the University of
Arkansas.
Members of the Lyrique Quintette are: Ronda Mains, flute (B.M., M.Ed.,
Boise State University, D.M.A., University of Oregon), Theresa
Delaplain,
oboe (B.M., Bowling Green University, M.M., University of Michigan,
D.M.A.,
Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music), Nophachai Cholthitchanta,
clarinet (Performer's Diploma, Indiana University, M.M., University of
Northern Colorado, D.M.A. candidate, University of Missouri-Kansas City
Conservatory of Music), Richard Ramey, bassoon (B.M./B.A. University of
Southern California, M.M., Arizona State University, D.M.A. candidate,
Michigan State University), and Timothy Thompson, horn (B.M., University
of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, M.M./D.M.A., University of
Wisconsin-Madison).

FINANCIAL AWARD: full tuition scholarship (both in-state and out-of-
state
applicants) for 4-5 years. Scholarships are renewable for up to 10
semesters, assuming satisfactory performance.

The University of Arkansas Department of Music is fully accredited by
the
National Association of Schools of Music to offer the Master of Music in
all performance specialties, in Vocal and Instrumental Conducting,
Theory
and Composition, History of Music (including an option in Early Music
Performance), and Music Education. The Department of Music has a
distinguished full-time faculty of 35.

Fayetteville, Arkansas is in the scenic Boston Mountains of Northwest
Arkansas, a thriving area of over 260,000 in population. The University
has a resident student population of 17,000 and is the cultural and
recreational focus of a beautiful region.

There are many outstanding performance opportunities throughout the
University and the community, including the Fort Smith Symphony, the
North Arkansas Symphony, the Boston Mountain Chamber Players, the
University Symphony Orchestra, the University Bassoon Ensemble, a
wide range of choral ensembles, chamber and solo performance, jazz
ensembles, Early Music performance, and two symphonic bands.
Performances are given in the nationally-acclaimed Walton Arts Center
and in the Fine Arts Concert Hall, designed by famed Edward Durrel
Stone, architect of the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.
