Subj: [DR-L] Portrait of Dorian Grey as an oboist
Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2007 09:47:45 -0500

Dear List:
Today like Dorian Grey,I have become immortal as the principal subject of a
new painting.I am playing the oboe why back when I had a full set of black
hair!
The portrait of the oboist as a youngster(33 years ago!--oh where have the
reeds gone?) now hangs on my wall and leads to my query for the day:are
there many oboists--or bassoonists--painting these days?Does it influence
your outlook on playing our double reed instruments?
I studied for too short a time with the late and great Harold Gomberg and he
was always painting and referred to his oboe playing as his "hobby." The day
he exhibited his luscious colors(similar to his playing) in a one man art
show --I missed it sorry--seemed to be a highlight of his colorful life. One
of his students Marsha Heller is also a painter/artist as well as
distinguished professional oboist and teacher.
And others?

Best wishes from a new immortal.
